1 vs 1 moves to beat an opponent
To beat an opponent, fake in one direction, then move in another direction altogether.
- judging your opponent's speed and direction
- timing the 1vs1 move
- change of speed to destabilize your opponent ; keeping the defender off-guard/off-balance
- shielding the ball (using all the body : shoulders, feet, etc.)
Equipment: balls, cones, pinnies (2 colors).

1 vs 1 stop-ball game :
Following the diagram, set up a 10x10 sq. yd. finishing zone. Split the players into two teams (the red team and the yellow team).
The yellows (the defenders) stand next to the finishing zone (three on either side). The reds (the attackers) stand opposite the finishing zone, three on the right and three on the left of the field. Facing the goal, the trainer stands with all the balls in-between the two groups of attackers.
At about the same time, he passes a ball to each of the first attackers. The attackers try to dribble into the finishing zone and stop the ball there in order to score. The first two defenders try to stop them.
Continue like this with the following players. The attackers and defenders change roles every four minutes.
Coaching points :
- use different 1 vs 1 moves to beat an opponent
- vary speed to get past an opponent
